Molecular weight distribution and removal of dissolved organic matters in Pearl River water

A ultrafiltration was applied to determine the distribution of molecular weight(MW)of dissolved organic matters in Pearl River water.The removal of the organic matters by conventional coagulation,potassium permanganate and powdered active carbon(PAC)pretreatment were investigated.The results showed that the low MW organics were the dominant organic matters in Pearl River water.Good correlationships between TOC and UV254 in each MW range of all water samples were confirmed.The removal of dissolved organic matters by conventional coagulation gradually declined with the decrease of organic MW.Potassium permanganate pretreatment enhanced the removal of organics with various MW;while higher removal of low and medium MW organic matters was obtained by PAC adsorption,which was a proposed supplementary process for conventional coagulation.
