Studies on Actinidia Breeding by Species Hybridization

Wang Shengmei, Huang Renhuang,Wu Xianwei and Kang Ning(Wuhan Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica, Hubei 430074)  
Species hybridization of Actinidia has been carried out since 1983 to breed new seedless varieties with high vitamin C content. Fourteen combinations were conducted,of which the combination between A. chinensis and A. eriantha was paid particular attention. A methods were invented to overcome the nensynchronous flowering time of the parent plants, to elevate fruit-setting rates of the hybrid, and to shorten the breeding span. Some new Actinidia varieties and types with potential values were obtained.
