Identification of apple cultivars for their resistance to ring rot disease

The trunk and branch resistant ability to apple ring rot disease (Botryosphaeria berengeriana f. sp. piricola) of 17 apple cultivars and selections,such as Fuji,Golden Delicious,Starking,Gala,Huaguan and GS4354,GS4772 etc. in the field and greenhouse were identified through artificial inoculation; the correlation between lenticel density and size and resistant ability were studied as well. The results showed that Qinguan,Kitanosach cultivars and GS4354 selection had higher resistance; Fuji,Huaguan,Golden Delicious and Starking were easily infected. There was a remarkable negative correlation between lenticel density and size and the resistance to this disease among the cultivars. It is suggested that the lenticel density and size could be used as an index for evaluating the resistance of a cultivar to this disease.
