Effects of different irrigation methods and quantity on yield and water use efficiency in pear

Experiment was conducted with 8 to 9-year-old trees of Huangguan pear cultivar (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd cv.Huangguan) for studying the effect of different irrigation methods and quantity on water use efficiency (WUE). Results showed that the photosynthetic rate of alternative root-zone irrigation (ARI) was similar to conventional root-zone irrigation (CRI), but its transpiration rate was dropped significantly than CRI; its WUE was significantly higher than that of CRI. There were no significant difference in fruit yield and per fruit weight between ARI and CRI, but the WUE of ARI was markedly higher than that of CRI. The WUE of fixed root-zone irrigation(FRI)was between ARI and CRI, but its fruit yield and per fruit mass were decreased significantly than ARI and CRI.
