Progress in protoplast culture and somatic hybridization in banana(Musa spp.)

Banana(Musa spp.) is a staple food for about 5 000 million people in developing countries that ranks fourth among food crops after rice,wheat and maize in the world.Genetic improvement by classical breeding methods often encounters the problem of sterility,which characterize the majority of banana genotypes.Somatic hybridization through the fusion of protoplasts would be a potential alternative to circumvent the barriers of sterility.Protoplast culture has become a useful technique for genetic improvement in most crops,and can be considered as a technique complementary to conventional breeding.Its application to somaclonal variation,genetic transformation and somatic hybridization shows great potential.Since the first attempts at banana protoplast isolation were made by Bakry in 1984,various researches on banana protoplast isolation,culture and fusion have been done and more than 10 cultivars have been regenerated.An overview is given of the isolation,culture and fusion of protoplasts in banana.
