Effects of rainfall harvesting cultivation with ridges and furrows on emergence and grass yield of alfalfa in semiarid areas

The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different coverage materials and ratios of furrow to ridge on emergence rate,soil water storage and hey yield of alfalfa,using rainfall harvesting technique with ridges and furrows,ridges serve as runoff zones and furrows serve as planting zones.The results showed that ridges covered with plastic film had a higher emergence rate,soil water storage and hey yield than flat planting(control),the increases of seeding ratio,soil water storage and dry matter were 6.12 %,16.1 % and 58.1 % compared with control,respectively.The effect of ridges compacted with soil was not obvious,this treatment had an average decrease of 4.7 % in seeding ratio,and increase of 3.1 % and 8.4 % in soil water storage and hey yield compared with control,respectively.The technique of rainfall harvesting with ridges and furrows can increase soil water storage,leading a high alfalfa production,especial ridges covered with plastic film,the ridges width of 60 cm and 75 cm both achieve better stimulation effect than the ridges width of 30 cm and 45 cm.
