Study on Microwave Induced Oxidation Process for Dye Wastewater Treatment

By using ferrous-modified activated carbon as catalyst, microwave induced oxidation process (MIOP) was used to treat the simulated Argazol Blue (BF-BR) dye wastewater. The result showed that under the optimum condition of solid/liquid ratio 1∶10 (5.0 g modified activated carbon mixed with 50 mL BF-BR solution), microwave power 500 W, and irradiation time 5 min, the decolorization rate of BF-BR can come up to 99% and COD removal rate up to 96.8%. Kinetics study indicated that the oxidation process accords with the first order reaction kinetics, with the kinetics equation given as follows: ln C = 0.734 5 t + ln C_0 (r =( 0.991)), reaction velocity constant = 0.734 5 min~(-1), half life = 0.95 min. According to the further investigation, use of MIOP for treatment of BF-BR is more effective than that of activated carbon adsorption and simple microwave heating, and it is attributed to the cooperation of activated carbon adsorption with microwave induced oxidation.
