Adsorption Properties and Kinetics of Chromium from Aqueous Solution by Steel Slag

Steel slag was used as sorbent to remove chromium from aqueous solution.The influences of pH,dosage and diameter of steel slag,agitation speed on the adsorption effect of steel slag were investigated.The removal mechanisms of Cr(Ⅲ) by steel slag were studied based on the adsorption kinetics,diffusion models and variation of mineral composition of steel slag.The results show that the effective Cr(Ⅲ) removal by steel slag is not affected by pH.Cr(Ⅵ) is reduced to Cr(Ⅲ) and then removed by steel slag when the reducer Fe(Ⅱ) exists in the system.The removal efficiency of Cr(Ⅲ) can be improved by increasing steel slag dosage,decreasing steel slag diameter and increasing agitation speed.At the agitation speed of 180 r/min,the adsorption of Cr(Ⅲ) on the steel slag can be described by the Lagergren first-order kinetic model and the Weber-Morris intraparticle diffusion model,where steel slag internal diffusion is the rate-determining step of adsorption.Furthermore,the adsorption rate is decreased with the increase of initial Cr(Ⅲ) concentration.The results of XRD and XRF analysis show that chromium is adsorbed and removed by the formation of chromium oxides and Cr/Ca/Fe oxides.
