Comparison between A~2/O and ALO Processes for Treatment of Municipal Wastewater with Low C/N Ratio

To improve the low efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus removal from municipal wastewater with low C/N ratio,a pilot-scale anaerobic-anoxic-oxic(A2/O) process was modified to anoxic-low oxygen-oxic(ALO) process.The anoxic tank and the oxic tank(80% of volume) of the A2/O process were operated at low oxygen levels.The anaerobic tank was changed into anoxic condition.When the influent COD was 148.4 mg/L,HRT was 8 h,and wastewater temperature was 19 to 23 ℃,short-cut nitrification and denitrification in ALO process was achieved by controlling DO concentration in the low oxygen tank at between 0.2 and 0.6 mg/L.As the influent C/N ratio was about 3.5,the TN removal rate of ALO process was up to 73.8%,and the removal efficiencies of TN and TP were above 30% and 20% higher than those in the A2/O process,respectively.The volume of air consumed by the ALO process was 50% of that by the A2/O process.However,non-filamentous activated sludge bulking was found in the ALO process.
