Application of SWAN Radar Products to Nowcasting of Hail in Hedong Region of Gansu Province

A new method based on radar response was studied for hail nowcasting.The key characteristics of radar response data produced by the SWAN system were summerized by collecting 7 hail weather cases which occurred in July of 2011 in the Hedong region of Gansu.Thus,nowcasting for hail is feasible according to the key characteristics by using extrapolate data outputed from SWAN system.Comparing the nowcasting products for hail with the real condition of two hail cases which occured in 2012 in the east of Yellow River in Gansu,the results show that the new method had a significant effect for forecast and was suggested to apply in actual operation.
