Manufacture of SiC/FeSi_x Composite by Reactive Infiltration

Liu Xiaopan Zhao Xiujian Wu Qide Xu Xuewen(Dept. of Material Science and Engineering, Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan 430070)
In order to synthesize composite materials free of residual silicon phase, we have investigated reaction forming of SiC/FeSix by the infiltration of SiC/C/Fe preforms using silicon melts. Experiments show that dense SiC/ FeSix materials free of residual silicon can be obtained. Room temperature strength of this material is(220±10)MPa. A model on the relationship between ferrous concentration and the components of second phrase is proposed. The effect of heat - treatment on the sintered samples is discussed.
