Analysis on the Microstructure of Zirconia Coating Deposited by Plasma Spraying Technique

The microstructure of zirconia coating deposited by plasma spraying technique was studied by means of FESEM, SEM,TEM and XRD. The results show that zirconia coating is typical lamellar structure composed of column grain. The phase analysis showed that the monoclinic phase was transformed into tetragonal zirconia. The bonding was not good between the substrate and coating, and some large pores were found in the coating. There existed the fully molten area and unfully molten area in the surface of the coating. The fracture mode is intergranular fracture and intragranular fracture. The spraying power and spraying distance have a great influence on the quality of the coating.
