Effect of Different Cooling Techniques on Up-converted Fluorescence Efficiency of Er~(3+)/Yb~(3+) Co-doped BaF_2 Powder

A series of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped BaF_2 powders with the same compositions were prepared at different sintering temperatures, and the samples were cooled by liquid-nitrogen refrigerating and air-cooling, respectively. It was detected that the up-converted fluorescence intensity could be enhanced 20 times with liquid-nitrogen refrigerating than that with air-cooling. The crystal structures of samples show no apparent difference by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). However, compared with the samples cooled by air-cooling, the lattice parameter of BaF_2 and the concentration of Yb_2O_3 in the samples cooled by liquid-nitrogen refrigerating were both smaller. It was induced that more rare earth ions substituted the Ba 2+ as sensitizing center with liquid-nitrogen refrigerating, which enhanced the efficiency of up-converting fluorescence of samples.
