Research and Development Perspective of Co-continuous Ceramic Composites

Co-continuous ceramic composites (C4 materials) are a new class of ceramic/metal composites with newly reinforcement manner, where the reinforcing ceramic phase, as the base of the composite, is characterized as the three-dimensional interpenetrating structure; and the metallic phase is filled in the interspaces of the ceramic network, as the ductile phase of the composite. Some untraditional forming and fabricating technologies for the composites are required due to the special co-continuous internal structure. The internal structure of interpenetration determines co-continuous ceramic composites can retain more features and advantages of ceramic and metal respectively in the final composite, and also, perform the different characteristics from the traditional composites (such as particle reinforced composites and fiber reinforced composites) so that this class of composites gain the extensive application perspectives.
