Research of Aluminium Titanate-Mullite Composite with Waste Aluminum Slag

Aluminium titanate-mullite composite was synthesized following solid-phase-sintering routine by using waste aluminum slag, kaoline and TiO2 powder as main raw materials. The influences of different ratios of raw materials on the crystalline phases and microstructures were discussed. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and relevent analytical software were used to characterize the crystalline phases and microstructures of derived composite. The results show that the best ratio for waste slag, kaoline and TiO2 powder is 68 ∶13 ∶19(mass fraction). The composite contains about 60.8% of aluminium titanate and 22.7% of mullite solid state solution phase. SEM observation results show that Al2TiO5 phase take automorphic shape and mullite phase are mainly needle-like shape. The result of performance analysis revealed that its bulk density is 3.53 g/cm3,the porosity is 9.8% and bending strength is 34.15 MPa.
