Preparation and Characterization of Pyridinium Modified Montmorillonite and Its Application in Polypropylene/Montmorillonite Nanocomposites

Hexadecane pyridinium bromine was prepared and organically modified montmorillonite was prepared with this pyridinium.Flourier transform infrared(IR),wide-angle X-ray diffraction(XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) were employed to test the modified montmorillonite.IR spectra revealed that the pyridinium was loaded in the galleries of montmorillonite.XRD patterns indicated that the d-spacing of montmorillonite layers increased to 2.97 nm in pyridinium modified montmorillonite.TGA results showed the thermal stability of pyridinium modified montmorillonite had been noticeably improved.Polypropylene(PP)/montmorillonite nanocomposites were synthesized with this pyridinium modified montmorillonite by solution blending.XRD patterns proved that montmorillonite layers were dispersed in PP matrix by nanometer size.
