Comparing Study on Hydration Properties of Various Mineral Admixtures in Composite Cementitious Materials

The hydration properties of cementitious materials containing glass powder,limestone powder or steel slag powder were compared by determination of strength,X-ray diffraction( XRD),thermal gravitydifferential thermal analysis( TG-DTA) and scanning electron microscopy( SEM) tsets. The results indicate that at the early curing age,steel slag powder,limestone powder,and glass powder in the cementitious system are mainly served as inert materials with filling effect. Cementitious material containing 15% limestone powder or steel slag powder contribute to strength growth at early age. At late curing age( 90 d),the strength growth rate of the three composite cementitious materials is higher than that of pure cement for the secondary reaction of the mineral admixtures. Limestone powder can react with aluminates and form calcium monocarbonaluminate hydrates. The Ca( OH)_2content in cementitious material containing steel slag are the sum of Ca( OH)_2by cement hydration and Ca( OH)_2by reaction of active substance in steel slag such as C2 S and C_3 S,leading to increment of Ca( OH)_2over curing age.While the Ca( OH)_2content in cementitious material containing glass powder is decreasing with curingage for the reason that the consumption of Ca( OH)_2in pozzolanic reaction exceed the Ca( OH)_2production by cement hydration.
