Zhang Bing Wang Xiangjun Tong Qingxi (Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, Beijing 100101)  
Thick gullies are the results of soil erosion in the loess hill area. On the contrary, gully density could also embody the intensity of soil erosin. Linear extraction technique and a density statistical software have been developed to make a gully density map directly from TM image. By building a regression function between gully density and soil erosion intensity, the gully density map can be transfered to soil erosion intensity map. This method is very suitable for quick investigation of soil erosion in the extensive loess area.
