Design and implementation of a high-speed image tracking system based on FPGA

When applying conventional visual tracking system into high-speed movement like missile terminal guidance,targets in image may be deformed or fuzzy, which will result in negative impact on tracking accuracy. To solve the problems above, a high-speed image tracking system based on FPGA is designed and implemented. The system acquires targets' information by high-speed image of 125fps(frames per second) and embeds centroid calculation in dynamic threshold method to achieve real-time target detection and centroid calculation within the parallel computing features of FPGA. Then the PTZ will be controlled by the distance between the centroid and the center of the visual field to track high-speed moving targets.Finally, a target tracking simulation experiment is carried out. The results show that the system can track fast moving targets,and the PTZ tracking speed can reach about 50.7 degrees/second, which improves the problems of big error and low precision when tracking high-speed moving target with low-speed image tracking system.
