Analysis of Birth Defects Monitoring in Hongshan District of Wuhan from 2006 to 2009

Objectives To know the incidence of birth defects,dynamic changes and epidemic characteristics,provide the basis of policy-making and intervention of birth defects.Methods According to the scheme of birth defects monitoring,proceeded the systematic analysis to the resources on birth defects monitoring from 1st January,2006 to 31st December,2009 with chi-square test.Results Total cases have been reached 36 078 in 4 years,560 of which were birth defects and incidence was 15.52‰;incidence of birth defects is related to maternal residence,age,fetal numbers and so on,no correlation with fetal gender and birth season.Top 5 diseases related to birth defects are congenital heart disease,multiple fingers(toes),cleft lip and palate,congenital hydrocephalus,limb atrophy respectively.Conclusions Strengthening pre-marital,pre-pregnancy and perinatal(especially early pregnancy) care,monitoring and intervention to focus group,the incidence of birth defects could be reduced.
