The Effect of Low Level Lead Exposure on Infant Neuro-Behavioral Development

PAN Liming1,HUANG Qingsheng2,XU Yong1(1.Tianhe Maternal and Child Health Institue,Guangzhou 510620,China;2.Direct Subordinate Clinic of Guangdong Provincial Border Control Bureau,Guangzhou 510620,China)
To study the effects on the neuro-behavioral development of infants exposed to intrauter low levels of lead,110 infants were selected and their umbilical blood lead level was determined. The neurobehavioral-cognitive performance of neonates was evaluated by Neonatal Behavioral Neurological Assessment(NBNA)and Gesell Assessment. The results showed that these scores in infants with blood lead levels greater than or equal to 0.24 μmol/L were markedly lower than those withless than 0.24 μmol/L,and the difference was highly significant. It blood lead levels of less than 0.48 μmol/L could still have harmful effects on the development of children.
