A Correlation Study on Short Message Service and Personality Characteristics for College Students

Objective To investigate the difference of personality characteristic among college students on using SMS,the inner relationship betueen the SMS and personality characteristics,and its potential impact on personality characteristics.Method This study uses self-editing Short Massage Service(SMS)questionnaire and EPQ to carry out a random sample survey among 514 students of 14 colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province.Results The quantities of SMS usage have significant difference in different sex,duty,monthly living expenses,years of cell phone owned,card brand and main targets to send(P0.01).The speed of compiling SMS and strange communication were negatively correlated with introversion(r were-0.128 and-0.087,respectively),while quantities of SMS usage per month,bad message,confused and illusion experience were positively correlated with extraversion(r were 0.267,0.103,0.096 and 0.094,respectively),and the difference between them all had significant difference(P0.05 or P0.01).The quantities of SMS usage per month had significant difference between extraversion and introversion(χ2=3.966,P0.01).The 6 variables related to cell phone dependence degree were positirely correlated with emotional stability,and all of them had significant difference in emotional stability(P0.01).Conclusion The degree of dependency on SMS and the personality characteristics and emotional stability have the close relations.
