Study of Degradation of p-Chlorophenol in Aqueous Solution with Pulsed Corona Discharge Plasma

Organic compounds in the aqueous solution can be degradated efficiently through the oxidation reactions of p-chlorophenol and non-thermal plasma formed due to the direct pulsed high-voltage corona discharge in the wastewater. Investigation showed that the degradation of p-chlorophenol in wastewater with various discharge parameters is a first-order reaction, C=C0e-kt. The degradation rate of p-chlorophenol can be increased by increasing the peak voltage Vp and the repetition rate of pulse f. However, increasing the distance l between the discharge electrode and the ground electrode will decrease severely the degradation rate of p-chlorophenol. When certain discharge parameters are applied in degradation, the degradation rate constant k of p-chlorophenol could be described as: k=10-8(Vp)4.22,k=4.78×10-6f 1.81,and k=-1.184×10-2lnl+0.02153.
