Manufacture of Single-Cell Protein Feed by Solid-State Fermentation of Cassava Residues with Industrial Saccharidase

In Guangxi province of China, the cassava is one of the major economic crops, and is mainly used to produce starch. During which, massive cassava residues will be produced simultaneously, and if it is abandoned, it will cause the waste of resource and environment pollution. A means of utilizing the cassava residues to produce single-cell protein feed via solid-state fermentation with industrial saccharidase and Candida utilis was proposed and studied. The experimental results show that the most suitable pretreatment of the cassava residues used as raw material for solid-state fermentation is the high temperature sterilization, and the adequate concentrations of urea and sulfuric ammonium in culture medium are 3% and 6%, respectively. Through single factor orthogonal experiment, the optimal fermentation conditions were obtained as follows. The saccharidase concentration used is 4%, moisture content is 70%, fermentation time is 72 h and inoculum concentration is 10%. Under those conditions, the crude protein content increases from 11.59% of the substrate before fermentation to 28.28% of the fermentation product. Comparing with other cassava residues utilizing methods, the method proposed has the advantages of easy control and no need of the starch decomposing eumycete, and these advantages will cause the method proposed has lower cultivation cost and potential availability for industrial production.
