Influence of different joints on structural performance of T-stub connections

Connections using T-stub and high strength bolt to join beam and column have good mechanical performance. The structural behaviors of the connections are strongly affected by the forms of joints. In order to study the influence of different T-stub structures on the mechanical performance of the connections,nonlinear finite element models were built by ABAQUS based on an experimental research. Through the numerical simulation analysis,the cyclic plastic characteristics of material,the contact of connection parts and the pre-tightening force of high strength bolts were considered in the models. The mechanical performances of connections with different forms of T-stub structures under cyclic loading were discussed. The simulation results prove that the enhanced connections improve carrying capacity but weaken ductility and energy dissipation performance. The weakened connections improve the deformation capacity and the energy dissipation performance but decline thecarrying capacity. The ductility coefficient and energy dissipation coefficient of the widened T-stub connections are 1. 3 times as large as those of the ordinary one,and the carrying capacity is increased by 43. 3%,which shows that the widened T-stub connections have better structural behavior than others.
