Between "Truth-seeking" and "Practicality-seeking" : A Review of Writing the History of Chinese Literary Criticism in the Early Twentieth Century

Under the guidance of the Western Scientism, the radical trend of anti-tradition and re-valuation of traditional values were formed in the May 4th period, which promoted the rise of the his-tory of Chinese literary criticism indirectly. "Truth-seeking" and "practicality-seeking" are two differ-ent ways of writing the history of Chinese literary criticism in the early twentieth century. Those twomethods derived from the conflict between tradition and modern, and caused a lot of problems in thepath of writing, thinking pattern and theoretical character. The focus disputed rest in the historicalprinciple of truth-seeking need pluralistic vision, and true historicism is related with pluralism andrelativism. Practicality-seeking, however, would deviate from the objectivity of literary criticism histo-ry. Chen Zhongfan put forward the historical criticism; Guo Shaoyu advocated the history of criticism;Luo Genze advocated path principle. All of them have focused on historical principle of truth-seek-ing. Hu Shi's rearranging the national heritage seemed as a fusion of Chinese and Western, and hetended to obey the principal of "practicality-seeking". Chinese literary criticism history subject wascreated between the principal of truth-seeking and practicality-seeking.
