Principal Component and Cluster Analysis of 5 Metal Elements in Fruits of Olive Cultivars Introduced to Xichang

This study analysed the content of 5 metal elements, including zinc, calcium, manganese, magnesium and iron in ripe fruits(sarcocarp and seeds) of 15 olive cultivars introduced to Xichang by using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. In order to determine the characteristic metal elements of olive fruits and classify the 15 varieties, the distribution of these metal elements were analysed by principal components analysis and cluster analysis. The determination results showed that the average content of the 5 metal elements in olive sarcocarp and seeds in order both were CaMgFeZnMn, and the content of Ca, Zn, Mn in seeds were basically higher than those in sarcocarp, while the content of Mg, Fe in sarcocarp were basically higher than those in seeds. Principal components analysis suggested that Mn, Mg and Fe in sarcocarp, and Ca in seeds were the characteristic metal elements of olive fruits. Cluster analysis showed that 15 olive varieties could be classified into five groups, which could reflect there existed the hereditary difference of metal elements in olive cultivars to a certain extent and this difference might be used as important reference for authentication and classification of olives.
