Prospects and advancement in super hybrid rice breeding in China

XIE Li-ping(Rice Research Institute,Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences,Nanning 530007,China)  
The present study is an attempt to review the history of super hybrid rice breeding in China and abroad and an introduction to advancement in super hybrid rice breeding in China.At present,a great breakthrough in utilizing subspecies heterosis of indica and japonica rice and plant type breeding has been obtained in super hybrid rice breeding in China,and super hybrid rice has been extended for large scale cultivation.But,there are many problems existing in super hybrid rice cultivation,such as poorer adaptability,lower seed setting rate,bad grain quality,worse resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses,fewer double-cropping super rice varieties(combinations),imperfect breeding theory and technology.Therefore,some suggestions and research prospects have been put forward for overcoming these problems.
