Plant resources diversity investigation based on Guangxi Ziyuan(Meixi)-Xing'an expressway

【Objective】The present study was conducted to investigate plant resources along the highway of Guangxi Ziyuan(Meixi)-Xing'an expressway in order to provide references for local expressway construction and natural resources protection. 【Method】The plant species and forest resources status were explored by investigating and analyzing vegetation type status and biodiversity along the highway and applying list quadrat investigation and random sampling method. 【Result】The karst landform and acid rock stratum were the main type along the highway of planned constructing Ziyuan(Meixi)-Xing'an expressway. There had 29 families,189 genus and 398 species of plants. Out of which, 3 species belonged to national key protected plants, and Pinus massoniana was the larger type and had about 320 plants. The plant families with more species were Gramineae, Astreraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Papilionaceae, Rosaceae, Rubiaceae, Rutaceae, Moraceae,Caesalpiniaceae, Verbenaceae, Mimosaceae, which accounted for 38.46% of total families, and their species accounted for 60.32% of total species. The total area along this highway was 2512.2 ha, and total area of all vegetations was 2115.5ha. P. massoniana, P. elliottii, C. lanceolata, C. camphora and L. formosana plantation were the main forest vegetation.The mature forest of P. massoniana had the largest area(402.8 ha), which accounted for 19.04% of total area. There had101 species of arbor plant, 121 species of shrub plant, 170 species of herbal plant and 49 species of vine plants, which accounted for 21.45%, 28.65%, 38.12% and 11.91% of total species, respectively. The plant resources of investigated zone could be classified into 12 types, viz., timber plant, medicinal plant, oil plant, textile plant, starch plant, varied fruit plant, aromatic plant, tannin extract plant, nectariferous plant, forage plant, flower and ornamental plant, water andsoil conservation plant. Among all of vegetation types, 7 formations and 10 associations showed above 4.0 m of plant height. As to plant structure, most of vegetation was lack of arbor layer and showed below 4.0 m of plant height. As to species composition, there were only 30 species in 400 m2 quadrat of the most abundant vegetation C. camphora plantation in investigated zone, and the most of coenotypes only had 10-15 species. 【Conclusion】The construction project of Guangxi Ziyuan(Meixi)-Xing'an expressway occupied lands along the highway and changed land utilizing way, had significant effects on vegetation and plant resources. Therefore, it is needed to sufficiently consider vegetation type in the process of constructing expressway in order to rationally protect local plant species.
