Effects of simulated acid rain stress on physiological characteristics of Brassica chinensis L.

【Objective】The effects of simulated acid rain stress on physiological characteristics of Brassica chinensis L.leaves were investigated,in order to provide reference for formulating control measures of acid rain.【Method】The plants of B.chinensis L.variety(Heiyoudong) were sprayed with simulated acid rain of p H 5.6,4.5,3.5 and 2.5,respectively,with water of p H 7.0 as control(CK).Then the physiological and biochemical indexes of B.chinensis L.under simulated acid rain stress were determined.【Result】The results showed that,with the increase of rain acidity,the contents of chlorophyll a,chlorophyll b,total chlorophyll and malondialdehyde(MDA) in leaves of B.chinensis L.first increased and then decreased,and the former three indexes rose to the maximum at p H 4.5 of simulated acid rain,but MDA content rose to the maximum at p H 3.5.However,the contents of proline,soluble protein,soluble sugar first decreased and then increased,and the former two indexes dropped to minimum at p H 4.5 of simulated acid rain,the soluble sugar content dropped to minimum at 5.6,and the content of carotenoid decreased continuously.Furthermore,the contents of proline and soluble sugar changed dramatically under acid rain stress of p H 4.5,and which were decreased by 58.37% and50.89%,respectively,compared with CK.【Conclusion】The acid rain of p H 4.5 may be the threshold value for recessive damage to B.chinensis L.,so the moderate acid rain can motivate its resistance to acid rain.Therefore,in southern China with severe acid rain,an appropriate amount of lime should be used to improve soil acidity before B.chinensis L.is planted,and protected cultivation technique also should be applied to prevent acid rain from harming leaves of plants.
