THE MECHANISM OF EXPANSION OF CLINOPTILOLITE AS LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE

An air-tight minifurnace up to 1500℃ specially designed and made by the authors was coupled to a gas chromatography for the continuous on-line measurement of the gas escaping from the zeolite calcined in the said furnace during the heating perio(?). It was found that the expansion of zeolite was predominantly due to the gas formed by residual water at high temperature. The amount and escaping velocity of residual water could be controlled by changing the kind and content of alkali and alkali-earth metal ions containing in the zeolite.Thereby, the zeolite lightweight aggregates with various expansion behavior could be obtained. According to the investigation, chemical composition range of raw materials used for lightweight aggregate with various expansion behavior has been advanced and verified. Thus it might he guided to choose the raw materials of man-made lightweight aggregate. It can also be deduced from this that both Ca~(2+)-type and Na~+ type clinoptilolites rich in reserves in China could be calcined to excellent man-made lightweight aggregate.
