STUDY ON SILICON CARBIDE SYNTHESIZED WITH SILICEOUS COLLIERY WASTE

SiC was prepared with siliceous colliery waste, quartzite, anthracite coal and weakly caking coal by Acheson process. The microstructure of siliceous colliery waste was investigated by SEM. It is found that globular SiO 2 exist in an organic material thin_layer. The diameter of globular SiO 2 is less than 10 μm and the thickness of the organic material thin_layer is less than 5 μm. Reaction procedure model was developed on the basis of SEM study. It is considered that quick and thorough synthetic reaction of SiC is capable at lower temperature due to the microstructure of siliceous colliery waste. The experimental results indicate that siliceous colliery waste is the perfect natural raw material of industrial synthesis of SiC by Acheson process and can be used for substituting quartzite, expensive petroleum coke or relative deficient anthracite coal. The replacement can reduce pollution and at the same time reduce power consumption and production costs of SiC.
