EFFECT OF SINTERING ADDITIVES ON THE MICROSTRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF SELF REINFORCED Si_3N_4 CERAMICS

Effects of mass fraction of sintering additives and the ratio between Y 2O 3 and La 2O 3 on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Si 3N 4 were studied. The results show that the flexual strength and fracture toughness of the ceramics reach the peak value when the mass fraction of sintering additives is 15%. The optimum composition is 5%Y 2O 3 +10%La 2O 3+85%Si 3N 4, and the materials made from this composition exhibit the best performances with the flexual strength of 911.3 MPa and the fracture toughness of 10.02 MPa·m 1/2 . In addition, the relation between microstructure and mechanical properties of self reinforced Si 3N 4 were discussed. It is found that the microstructure with a distinct bimodal size distribution of grain diameters is beneficial to the mechanical properties of β -Si 3N 4 ceramics.
