PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYSTYRENE/KAOLINITE NANOCOMPOSITES

Kaolinite is a kind of layered silicate mineral. Polystyrene/kaolinite nanocomposites were prepared by using dimethyl sulphoxide(DMSO)as precursor. It is found that DMSO can be effectively intercalated into kaolinite after suitable treatment, which become hydrophoby from hydrophile in the layers, resulted in the decrease of surface energy. Styrene monomer can easi-ly intercalated into the layers and polymerized by heating to finally prepare polystyrene/kaolinite nanocomposites. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis, transmitting electron microscope and scanning electron microscope and are approved to be polystyrene/kaolinite nanocomposites.
