STUDY ON PRODUCTS AND STRUCTURAL CHANGES OF REACTION OF PALYGORSKITE WITH ACID

The products and structural changes of the reaction between palygorskite and acid were investigated with TEM and XRD. The results indicate that dissolution of octahedral cations of palygorskite increases with the increasing of acid concentra-tion and reacting time. Tetrahedral silicon inside of palygorskite is partly decomposed into silicic acid and/or poly-silicic acid in the solution while octahedral cations are dissolved, and partly aggregated in the filtrate. Part of tetrahedral silicon keeps the pseudo-morphology until acid hydrolysis. After palygorksite reaction is completed (octahedral cations are dissolved completely), the final product is mesoporouse amorphous silica-fiber. Comparing to sedimentary genesis palygorskite, hydrothermal genesis palygorskite is more anti-acid, which is related to the mineralogical property such as crystallinity and ordering of Mg and AI in octahedron of palygorskite. Experiment results show that composition and crystal structure of palygorskite treated with acid cannot be recovered in magnesium solution.
