INFLUENCE OF ZrB_2 CONTENT ON PROPERTIES OF LaB_6ZrB_2 COMPOSITES

LaB_(6)ZrB_(2) composite powders with different content of ZrB_(2) were synthesized by carbon thermo-reduction method and the corresponding polycrystalline composites were fabricated by hot pressing sintering method. The effects of the ZrB_(2 )content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were studied. The results show that the hardness and bending strength of LaB_(6)ZrB_(2) poly-crystals are enhanced with the increasing of ZrB_(2) content, while the fracture toughness is increased firstly and decreased afterwards and it reaches the optimum value when the mass fraction of ZrB_(2) is 21% . The microstructure and fracture morphology of the composites were revealed by means of metallographic and SEM. The improved of the composites mechanism of the fracture toughness by adding ZrB_(2) was analyzed.
