EFFECT OF SINTERING AIDS ON MULLIZATION IN SILICON CARBIDE CERAMIC FOAMS

The effect of sintering aids,such as silica sol,alumina,clay,kaolin and quartz,on mullitization in silicon carbide foam ceramic was investigated.Experimental results show that the combination of silica sol,alumina and clay can obviously promote the creation of mullite phase during sintering at 1 400 ℃ for 1 h.A large amount of mullite phase is beneficial to increase the strength of the ceramic at high temperatures and to enhance the refractory property of the ceramic.Formation of mullite phase at relative low temperatures is attributed to the liquid phase produced by clay and the package action of amorphous SiO_(2) in silica sol for alumina particles,which can reduce the distance of diffusion.
