PREPARATION OF LiNiO_2 BY SOLID STATE REACTION AND ITS ELECTROCHEMICAL PERFORMANCE

Cathode material LiNiO_2 for lithium ion batteries was prepared by a novel technique of a solid state reaction combined with the melting salt method. The mixed powders of LiNO_3+LiOH and Ni(OH)_2 melting salt were analyzed in air by thermogravimetricdifferential thermal analysis. The effects of the preparation conditions such as reaction time, heat treatment, etc. on the structure of products were studied. X-ray diffraction results show that the prepared LiNiO_2 under the optimum conditions has a perfect structure of αNaFeO_2. Electrochemical performance tests show that when the chargedischarge current density is 0.5mA/cm2 and the chargedischarge voltage is 2.7—4.2V, the initial discharge specific capacity of the LiNiO_2 reaches 150.2 (mA·h)/g. The efficiency of coulomb is 82.9%. The discharge specific capacity remains 126.6 (mA·h)/g after 20 cycles. The results indicate that this technique can be used to prepare cathode material LiNiO_2 with good electrochemical properties.
