TRIBOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE OF MICRO-ARC OXIDATION COATINGS ON 15SiC_p/2024 ALUMINUM MATRIX COMPOSITES

Ceramic coatings were prepared on the surface of a 15SiCp/2024 aluminum matrix composite by the micro-arc oxidation method.The composition,structure and hardness profiles of the coatings were analyzed.The tribological behaviors of the coatings were investigated using a ball-on-disc friction and wear test system.The typical worn surfaces of the aluminum matrix composite substrate and the ceramic coatings were observed.The results show that the ceramic coating consists of a porous outer layer and a dense inner layer.The dense layer is mainly composed of mullite,α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3.The maximal microhardness of the coatings is over 20 GPa.The friction coefficient of the polished dense inner layer of ceramic coating against the ZrO2 ball under dry sliding is about 0.36,and the wear rate is only one fiftieth of the substrate.This indicates that the wear resistance of the aluminum matrix com-posite is greatly improved by the micro-arc oxidation method.
