DENSIFICATION MECHANISM FOR FINE GRAINED ALUMINA CERAMICS PREPARED BY COMBUSTION REACTION PLUS PRESSING PRESSURE METHOD

Dense fine grained alumina ceramics were prepared by the combustion reaction plus pressing method.The microstructure changes of the ceramics,as well as their densification and grain size changes at a fast heating rate,were examined by transmission electron microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy.The densification mechanism of the ceramics was discussed based on the crystallization dynamic and microstructure changes in the densification process.The results showed that the neck growth caused principally by surface diffusion could be negligible within 2 min.The grain growths can be controllable in a short sintering time and at a fast heating rate.The dissociation of basal dislocation is a type of stacking fault with a Burgers vector 1/3[1010 ] was formed on (1120) plane because of basal plane dislocation slip and climb processes in specimen,which shows both the high-temperature plastic flow and grain boundary sliding process of grains are the cause of densification of the ceramic sample.
