Research Progress on Growth Technique and Application of Sapphire Single Crystal

Sapphire single crystal is one of the most important mid-infrared optical materials due to its excellent overall performance in both military and civil applications.This review represents the major properties of sapphire single crystal.The growth methods and recent work on the sapphire single crystal are reviewed.The advantages and disadvantages of different growth methods are analyzed.Recent work on the sapphire single crystal applications is summarized.Further studies on the sapphire single crystal involve:(1) im-provement of growth methods and the near-net-shaping technology,and(2) improvement of the theory and technology system on the ultra-smooth machining for the sapphire single crystal.
