STUDY ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND INTERFACE OF SiC WHISKER-REINFORCED AlN MATRIX

SiC_w-AlN matrix composites whisker contents ranging from 10%~30%by mass were hotpressedat 1850℃. The composites with 30%SiC_w exhibit an increase in bending strength up to 85%and a 50%increasein fracture toughness.The microstructure examined by SEM and TEM indicates that the increase in bending strength is found to be dependent on the load shift from matrix to the whisker. Crack defection,crack branching and whisker bridging process may also contribute to the increase of fracture toughness. Interface between AlN matrix and SiC whiskers was observed by HREM in some interfacial areas. The effect of these reactions on the toughening mechanism is discussed in the paper.
