MICROWAVE SINTERING OF ZIRCONIA TOUGHENED ALUMINA CERAMICS

Zirconia toughened alumina(ZTA)cerarnics with a composition of 15%(in mass)ZrO_2(2.5%(mol)Y_2O_3)+85%(in mass)Al_2O_3 was sintered by microwave in a multi-mode cavity of 2.45GHz and 5kW.The rnicrowave heating process,microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered specimen were also com-pared with those of the specimen sintered in routine,Rapid sintering and densification were realized by adjusting appropriate insulation plotting and critical impedance matching in the resonant cavity. A relative density up to 99.0% theoretical can be obtained under the microwave processing for 30 min up to 1540℃.Sintering time is significantly reduced and sintering temperature is lower than that in routine sintering.The property tests and SEM analysis show that the microwave sintered ZTA have higher fracture toughness,fine and more uniform grain size when compared to those in the routine sintered.
