CHARACTERISTICS OF MORPHOLOGY ON THE INTERFACE BETWEEN ADDITIONS AND HARDENED CEMENT PASTE

The morphology of hardened cement pastes with mineral additions such as blastfurnace slag,steel slag,fly ash,limestone,marble and quartz,was studied by SEM and EDS.In particular,the morphological characteristics of the interfacial zone between these additions and hardened cement paste was observed.Three states exist at least for the grain surfaces of these additions in the paste after 1d hydration:(1)enveloped with CSH monofilm,(2)enveloped with CHCSH duplex film and (3)inserted in the mass of portlandite.However,after 28d hydration,there are two more obvious states:(1)CH shell and (2)gel shell.In both states,a layer of reaction products forms on the grain surfaces of the additions with pozzolanic or latent hydraulic property.The thickness of the reaction products is different in the reactivity of the additions.According to SEM observation on these reaction products,the reactivity of the additions is in the order as follows:blastfurnace slagsteel slagfly ashlimestone(marble)quartz.
