LOAD-DEFORMATION PROCESS AND STRENGTH OF FLEXURAL MEMBERS STRENGTHENED WITH GFRP COMPOSITE

This paper presents both numerical and experimental studies of the behaviour of flexural members strengthened with glass fibre\|reinforced plastic (GFRP) composite.The load\|deformation process,flexural failure characteristics and the effect of various parameters on their behaviour are all discussed.Furthermore,a method for the determination of the ultimate strength of such members is described.The test results show that the load\|deformation process of these strengthened slabs consists of four stages:elastic stage befroe cracking,cracking stage from first cracking to the yielding of steel bars, strength\|gaining stage from the yielding of steel bars to the initiation of debonding and the debonding propagation stage from the initiation of debonding to failure.In the first three stages,the results from a theoretical load\|deflection analysis employing the plane section assumption agree closely with those of the test.However,in the forth stage,the analytical results differ from those of the test due to the appearance and propagation of debonding.
