When magnesium ion is initially present in wastewater,an increase in pH upon alkalization will result in the precipitation of magnesium hydroxide. The resulting magnesium hydroxide is a gelatinous precipitate, which has been found to serve as an efficient coagulant and flocculant aid.Over the past years, the role of magnesium ions as a potential flocculant for the chemical clarification of wastewater have been investigated.A comprehensive review of high pH magnesium flocculant application in wastewater treatment and the development trend in the future are presented.
