Progress in hydrogen production by biological processes

Hydrogen is widely considered as a potential substitute for fossil fuels because of it as a clean, efficient and (reproducible) energy. The hydrogen production by biological processes was found to be less environment pollution and low energy consumption if compared with that of thermochemical or electrochemical processes. In this paper, the characteristics of four types of biological hydrogen production processes by different microorganisms were summarized, especially focusing on the recent progress in hydrogen production by the photosynthetic purple non-sulfur bacteria.
