Preparation of Chitosan Quaternary Ammonium Salt and its Thermal Stability

Different degree of substitution(DS) of chitosan quaternary ammonium salt was prepared.Single-factor experiment was used to analyse the condition of preparation,and the thermal degradatiion temperature of the product was discussed.The results showed that the optimum conditions of preparation were the ratio of epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride(ETA) to chitosan was 3:1,the ratio of water to isopropanol was 3:1,the temperature of the reaction was 80℃,the pH value of the reaction system was 6.0.Compared with the chitosan,the thermal stability of chitosan quaternary ammonium salt was descend,and with the increasing of DS,the initial degradation temperature(T0),maximum degradation temperature(Tp) and final degradation temperature(Tf) were descend gradually.Meanwhile,times which spend from initial degradation temperature to maximum degradation temperature were decrease with the increasing of DS.
