Preliminary Report on a Thread-footed Mite Feeding on Sugarcane Leaf Sheaths

A threat-footed mite(Tarsonemid mite)attacking sugarcane was found in the suburb of Guangzhou, Guangdong province. This mite feeding on sugarcane leaf sheaths, causing red or brownish red sports on the sheaths. Infested sugarcane plants perform irregular growth, shorter internodes and stalk length, lower yields, or even profuse sprout of lateral buds when serious damaged. The possible causes for the performance of the damaged cane are analyzed and investigation results are reported in this paper.
