The effect of nutritional deficiency on several physiological indices and stress resistance of Basella alba L. leaves

The growth of Basella alba L. plants under nutrition( N,P,K and Fe)-deficient conditions were studied in this study.The results showed that nutritional deficiency always caused varying degrees of reduction in the contents of chlorophyll,soluble proteins,and free amino acids. Nutritional deficiency also caused a reduced activity for protective enzyme systems including peroxidases,catalases,and superoxide dismutases. Comparing to normal nutrition culture,the Fe~(2+)-deficient treatment caused the largest reduction of protein content with less than 50% of chlorophyll content and the lowest contents of protective enzymes. On the other hand,the K~+-deficient treatment resulted in an increase of malondialdehyde content and significant increase in membrane permeability of the leaf and root tissues. This indicated that K~+-deficiency had the greatest effect on membrane permeability.
